U2 145 Flight Test Report – Selected Excerpts

Fly and Glide Magazine – December 2003

(Note: Translated into English from the original German, to the best of our ability.)

Hardware:
“Wills Wing hardware is the finest on the market…[the VG] operates smoothly and easily…nothing twists up, everything runs free and easy.”

Sail Construction:
“Like on the Wills Wing Talon, the bottom surface includes two additional zippers adjacent to the CG, for better access to the inside of the wing. These additional zippers help keep the bottom surface tight and flat in this area, as it is across the rest of the wing. Like other Wills Wing gliders, the U2 gives the impression of high attention to detail. The production quality is first class…”

Launch and Flying:
“The U2 has neutral static balance and shows first-class launch characteristics. The wing lifts its own weight very early, is exceedingly good-natured and presents no surprises during the launch. Once in the air, the handling is a wonderfully pleasant surprise; the glider is stable in straight flight, yet easy to turn, and shows no tendency towards yawing or oscillations when accelerating. There was no criticism of the handling to be found.”

Landing:
“The landing itself is extremely easy with the U2. The glider clearly indicates the proper moment to flare. Also, the handling is very good in slow flight. Unexpected bumps can be easily corrected for, right up to the point of touchdown.”

Summary:
“The U2 provides absolute flying pleasure, and can be recommended without reservation even for pilots who do not get to fly often. The manufacturing quality is the finest. Some minor complaints we had about our test glider have already been corrected according to the manufacturer on current production gliders. All in all the concept of the U2 is extremely well executed and should please a wide range of pilots looking for the easiest launching and landing along with first-class handling. The use of the VG also provides for a considerable level of performance. The glider is light in weight, in spite of its robust construction. The price isn’t the lowest, but for those who want the best, the choice could well be the U2.”
